A series of walks in the Essex countryside accessible via public transport
This circular walk is based on Chipping Ongar, located to the west of Chelmsford and takes in part of the Essex Way long distance footpath and visits two distinctive churches. Please note that parts of the walk can get wet and/or muddy after rain.
Use OS Explorer Map 183; alternatively, OS Landranger Map 167.
This walk commences and ends near The Two Brewers Pub in Chipping Ongar (Grid reference TL 551026), which is served by the 501 bus from Brentwood Rail Station (or the 32 bus from Chelmsford Rail Station – note that this bus does not run as frequently as the 501).
Going: The walk is undulating, with no steep climbs or descents (Easy)
Distance: Approximately 8 miles (13 Km).
Site to See: St. Andrews Church, Greensted - the oldest wooden church in the country, with walls that were built in the 11th-century and a white, wood-panelled Stuart tower.
Pubs: There are several pubs in Ongar and one in Toot Hill.
Our thanks to Ruth Gledhill in the Times Walks series (19 June 2009) for the basis of this walk.
